Branch Adjustable Laptop Stand for $65: If you work at a desk, a simple change is to set it up to be as ergonomic as possible. This laptop stand from Branch is our favorite. It is easily adjustable for height and angle and is super sturdy. If you can add a monitor with a separate keyboard and mouse, you can sit upright even more comfortably. If you’re on a bigger budget, consider a desk and a great chair – we’ve tested a few in our Best Home Office Equipment guide.

Gaiam Yoga Strap for $10: If you already own a long yoga strap, you can easily make your own shoulder strap brace for temporary use – my yoga teacher recommended this for use during class. Everyday Yoga also sells some affordable options, but they all work pretty much the same. According to yoga teacher Kathryn Budig: Wrap the band around your back, right around the bottom of your shoulder blade or bra line, and pull the excess evenly in front of you. Pull each end over your shoulders and cross them behind you, creating an X shape at your back. Pull the straps to your forehead, pull your shoulders back and fasten them at your forehead. The length of strap you’ll need depends on your body, including shoulder and chest size, but we recommend at least 10 feet. Anything less is likely to be more painful than helpful.

Final tips and advice

Try yoga and other exercises. A sedentary lifestyle is a one-way ticket to poor posture. Yoga in particular was touted as a means to good posture. When I am consistent with my practice, I notice myself sitting and standing taller outside of the studio, almost instinctively. If you’re not into yoga, core-strengthening exercises like planks and chest presses are also options. Alternatively, just incorporate morning stretching into your routine and it will do wonders.

Find a specialist doctor. A doctor, physical therapist, or chiropractor can help you find a corrector that supports problem areas of your body, or direct you to an alternative solution that does. Also, if you have severe back pain, neck pain, hunchback or scoliosis, always consult a doctor before trying any home remedies.
